Corrosion Control Technician

- Installs, maintains and operates cathodic protection systems.
- Collects information to aid in the design of cathodic protection systems.
- Conducts electrical surveys necessary for the installation and maintenance of cathodic protection systems using electrical survey instruments.
- Identifies and corrects problems in cathodic protection systems.
- Conducts current requirement tests and evaluates and corrects the results.
- Conducts required readings on assets and documents and/or enters it into the appropriate computer system.
- May oversee corrosion control work of contractor and company crews including the installation of anodes beds, test stations, rectifiers and insulation fittings.
- Maintains maps and records pertinent to cathodic protection systems.
- Inspects rectifier and deep-or-shallow ground bed installations.
- Interacts and helps build positive relationships with regulatory auditors.
- Performs activities to ensure responsiveness to natural gas and other emergencies.
- Completes and maintains accurate records and reports to comply with Company and regulatory requirements.
OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with Project Specialists, engineering, Senior Corrosion Control Technician, and Corrosion Coordinator when new steel pipe systems are being designed, relocated or replaced.
- May be required to hold stand-by duty, work shifts, holidays, weekends, emergency call outs, and occasional extensive hours.
- Is subject to reporting outside regular work area.
- Identifies, addresses, and reports safety and encroachment issues to their resolution and completion.
- Is responsible for the safe operation and inspection of assigned Company vehicles and equipment.
- Demonstrates support for and adheres to the Company’s values, strategies, policies and procedures and exhibits the core values of AtmoSpirit, Customer Service, Safety and the Company’s Code of Conduct both as an individual contributor, team member and/or leader of others.
- Must become familiar the Company’s procedures and Corrosion Guidelines and contents of the Safety Manual. Must complete all required safety training.
Prerequisites
Requires a general educational knowledge normally acquired through a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
The new corrosion technician should have three years of related senior-level experience in construction or service, or with a chemical or electrical background. The ideal corrosion technician has knowledge of math and science, can interpret data, and displays the following characteristics: motivated with a true passion for corrosion, possesses safety and analytical mindset, is a skilled problem-solver, and an effective communicator who is detail oriented, can work independently, and is ethical in reporting data.
Requires valid driver’s license in accordance with Company standards.
Certificates, Licenses, etc.
- Must obtain and maintain minimum Operator Qualifications (OQs) and successful completion of Corrosion Essentials.
- May be required to obtain (NACE) CP 1 Tester within 6 months of placement in position.
- Requires valid driver’s license.
Computer Skills
- Requires a working knowledge of various software applications to create documents, reports and graphical design. (excel)
- Requires ability to perform algebraic, trigonometric and geometric operations and/or moderately complex statistical methods.
- Must be able to pass basic math assessment.
Communication Skills
- Requires the ability to communicate with internal/external customers to obtain and/or provide explanations and/or information.
Work Conditions
- Works outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, high noise levels, rough terrain, and occasional work on ladders, roofs, attics, and under houses as well as confined spaces.
- May require overnight travel.
- May have residence requirement due to callout response time.
Physical Demands
- Requires occasionally performing activities including, but not limited to, bending, stooping, grasping, reaching, twisting, turning and/or lifting.
- Requires acute sense of sight and hearing (corrected or uncorrected) and strong sense of smell.
- Requires extensive walking on a daily basis.
- Must be able to lift tools, equipment and materials up to and including 60 pounds.
Other Requirements:
- As a Safety-Sensitive position, pre and post employment screenings, including but not limited to drug testing as outlined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and motor vehicle record (MVR) background checks are required.
Onboarding
Description of Course: As a part of your on-boarding process all new employees will attend Atmos Energy Essentials 3-Day. This 3-day training at the Charles K Vaughn center in Plano, TX has been designed to provide new employees with the keys to success at Atmos Energy. The information and activities provide the foundation for all other learning activities. Participants learn about what matters to the organization and how they fit into the vision and strategy. Topics include how to be-incident free, give back to the community, achieve financial results, serve the customer and learn something new each day. Participants also learn about themselves and other team mates, what it means to be at your best each day, how to hold themselves and others accountable and provide feedback. After leaving the three-day session new employees are better prepared to participate as a team member and contribute to the organization.

Technical/Job Readiness Skills
Description of Course: This course is offered as a stand-alone course The audience is a mid-size group consisting of MIC technicians, corrosion technicians, and others who would benefit from this course. This course is a prerequisite for Corrosion Essentials.
Instruction Type: Self-Guided eLearning Followed By Instructor-Led Training.
Timeframe: The eLearning pre-work component will be approximately 40 minutes long. The instructor-led training component is three days long.

Operator Qualifications: n/a
Description of Course: This course is offered as a stand-alone course. The audience is a very large group consisting of corrosion technicians, as well as field personnel such as engineers, town operators, project specialists, field construction coordinators, compliance technicians, distributor operators, construction operators, crew leaders, and certain managerial positions (compliance/operation supervisors). This course is a prerequisite for Corrosion Essentials as well as the I series of Construction Essentials.

Description of Course: The purpose of these courses is to provide new corrosion technicians with the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively perform Atmos Energy corrosion activities.
Instruction Type: Self-Guided eLearning Followed by Instructor-Led Training
Timeframe: The eLearning pre-work component will be approximately two to two and a half hours long. The instructor-led training component consists of three weeks of instruction.

Safety Skills
Description of Course: This advanced training program is designed to improve drivers’ skills and habits through a combination of classroom education and valuable on road instruction. Each driver learns through several behind the wheel experiences, and by observing an instructor-narrated drive that demonstrates unique techniques to navigate through traffic.

On the Job Learning
Description of Course: The Corrosion Control Technician on the job training is one-on-one training and practice sessions for each job task. The assigned coach breakdowns the job task into component steps and modifies training approaches in order to develop competence. TheCorrosion Control Technician demonstrates skills and techniques learned. Checklist completion documents the Corrosion Control Technician is job ready.

Timeframe: Dependent upon approval of OJT coach and supervisor.

Advanced Job Skills
Description of Course: The CP 1 – Cathodic Protection Tester course presents CP technology to students entering the cathodic protection industry.
The exams cover the following skill and knowledge factors:
- Basics of electricity, electrical laws, electrochemistry, corrosion and CP theory
- Polarity related to current flow and metal corrosion activity
- Conduct tests to identify shorts and continuity tests in CP systems
- Use test instruments to perform a variety of field tests such as structure-to-soil potentials, voltage and current measurements, soil resistivity, pipe/cable locating and rectifier readings
- CP components including impressed current systems, galvanic anodes and test stations
- Read shunts and understand their use in rectifiers, bonds, and anodes
- Perform periodic surveys to confirm the effectiveness of a CP system
- Reference cells, their maintenance, use, and precautions
- Basic location mapping, report preparation, and recordkeeping
- Review safety issues specific to CP
- Code requirements related to CP
Instruction Type: Instructor-Led Vendor Training
Timeframe: 5 Days
The following is strongly recommended, but not required:
- Six months CP work experience
- Ability to perform basic math calculations (simple algebra, fractions, and conversions)
