  1. Reads gas meters for residential, commercial and industrial customers. Records readings for billing purposes.
  2. Observes and reports all abnormal, dangerous and/or damaged conditions pertaining to gas meters and adjacent areas.
  3. Observes and reports atmospheric corrosion or damage.
  4. May perform basic service and/or construction work as qualified and required.
  5. Able to train entry level Meter Readers.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Identifies, addresses, and reports safety and encroachment issues.
  2. Is responsible for the safe operation and inspection of assigned Company vehicles and equipment.
  3. Demonstrates support for and adheres to the Company’s values, strategies, policies and procedures and learns the core values of AtmoSpirit, Customer Service, Safety and the Company’s Code of Conduct both as an individual contributor, team member and/or leader of others.
  4. Must become familiar with the contents of the Safety Manual, live by the spirit of its intent and become involved in creating and maintaining a safe working environment. Must complete all required safety training.

Prerequisites

Requires a general educational knowledge normally acquired through a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

Requires 6 months minimum meter reading experience. Must have demonstrated Meter Reader 1 skill proficiency and have completed all curriculum for that role.

Requires a valid driver’s license.

  • Must obtain and maintain Operator Qualifications (OQs) and classroom training for position and any other required OQs and classroom training.

Communication Skills

  • Requires the ability to communicate with internal and/or external customers in order to obtain and/or provide basic types of factual information.

Numeric Skills

  • Requires the ability to perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Computer Skills

  • Requires basic computer skills for data entry, reference and/or retrieval tasks.

Work Conditions

  • Works in an outdoor environment.

Physical Demands

  • Requires some physical requirements such as lifting and moving objects up to 60 pounds; extensive walking to read meters and operation of hand and mechanical equipment
  • Requires the acute sense of sight and hearing (corrected or uncorrected) and strong sense of smell.
  • Requires visual attention to detail in reading meter numbers accurately and recording them for billing purposes.

Other Requirements:

  • As a Safety-Sensitive position, pre and post employment screenings, including but not limited to drug testing as outlined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and motor vehicle record (MVR) background checks are required.

Onboarding

Description of Course: As a part of your on-boarding process all new employees will attend Atmos Energy Essentials 3-Day. This 3-day training at the Charles K Vaughn center in Plano, TX has been designed to provide new employees with the keys to success at Atmos Energy. The information and activities provide the foundation for all other learning activities. Participants learn about what matters to the organization and how they fit into the vision and strategy. Topics include how to be-incident free, give back to the community, achieve financial results, serve the customer and learn something new each day. Participants also learn about themselves and other team mates, what it means to be at your best each day, how to hold themselves and others accountable and provide feedback. After leaving the three-day session new employees are better prepared to participate as a team member and contribute to the organization.

Job Readiness Skills

Description of Course: This course provides familiarity in basic natural gas industry terminology and basic skills to accurately read gas meters. You will learn the Atmos customer service process, natural gas industry basics, Atmos billing basics, and Itron® functions, reading gas meters and checking for irregularities, abnormal operating conditions, atmospheric corrosion, dog bite avoidance, safety awareness, tampering & theft. OQ tasks covered are M16, I10.

Safety Skills

Description of Course: This advanced training program is designed to improve drivers’ skills and habits through a combination of classroom education and valuable on road instruction. Each driver learns through several behind the wheel experiences, and by observing an instructor-narrated drive that demonstrates unique techniques to navigate through traffic.

Description of Course: Students are given the opportunity to gain practical experience in dealing with dog attacks in the safety of a controlled environment.

Description of Course: The Segway Basic Rider Optimization Training is a four-hour program providing Segway Human Transporter (HT) riders with an introduction to basic riding techniques, safety features– how to recognize and respond appropriately, overview of service procedures, and spotting techniques used in guiding other riders. Please note that Segways are not used enterprise wide, and training will be dependent on your geographical location.

On the Job Learning

Description of Course: The Meter Reader 2 on the job training is one-on-one training and practice sessions for each job task. The assigned coach breakdowns the job task into component steps and modifies training approaches in order to develop competence. The Meter Reader 2 demonstrates skills and techniques learned. Checklist completion documents the Meter Reader 2 is job ready.

Pre-requisites: Meter Reading

Description of Course: This one-to-one skills training workshop prepares lead employees, instructors, subject matter experts, and others to become an on-the-job training (OJT) Coach/Mentor. The class consist of practice exercises and team assignments for you to learn how to teach skills. You will cover roles and responsibilities, adult learning principles, content-free coaching, teaching strategies, program management and action planning. The course is intended for Potential OJT Coach/Mentors. No prerequisites or pre-work required.

Instruction Type: On-The-Job Training

Timeframe: The estimated duration of this course is two and a half days.

Pre-requisites: Selected by supervisor. Must be established as a “go-to person” for meter reading.
