  1. Performs routine work with full understanding of prescribed procedures.
  2. Assists in the installation and maintenance of natural gas lines, meters and regulators.
  3. May assist in conducting leakage surveys. Reads maps, locates underground natural gas lines, classifies natural gas leaks. Operates combustible natural gas indicators and flame ionization units.
  4. Operates heavy equipment once fully qualified.
  5. May assist in welding operations and pipe joining procedures.
  6. May assist in the installation and maintenance of cathodic protection systems.
  7. Performs activities to ensure responsiveness to natural gas and other emergencies.
  8. Completes and maintains accurate records and reports to comply with Company and regulatory requirements.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. May be required to hold stand-by duty, work shifts, holidays, weekends, emergency call outs, and occasional extended hours.
  2. Is subject to reporting outside regular work area.
  3. Identifies, addresses, and reports safety and encroachment issues to their resolution and completion.
  4. Is responsible for the safe operation and inspection of assigned Company vehicles and equipment.
  5. Demonstrates support for and adheres to the Company’s values, strategies, policies and procedures and learns the core values of AtmoSpirit, Customer Service, Safety and the Company’s Code of Conduct both as an individual contributor, team member and/or leader of others.
  6. Must become familiar with the contents of the Safety Manual, live by the spirit of its intent and become involved in creating and maintaining a safe working environment. Must complete all required safety training.

Prerequisites

Requires a general educational knowledge normally acquired through a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

Must have demonstrated Construction Operator 1 proficiency and have completed all curriculum for that role.

Requires valid driver’s license in accordance with Company standards. May require CDL, if required see Driver’s Qualification policy.

Certificates, Licenses, etc.

  • Must obtain and maintain Operator Qualifications (OQs) and classroom training for position and any other required OQs and classroom training or certifications.
  • If required, must obtain and maintain welding certification.

Computer Skills

  • Requires ability to utilize the Company’s internet/intranet web site and available resources for data entry, reference and/or retrieval tasks.

Communication Skills

  • Requires the ability to communicate with internal/external customers to obtain and/or provide explanations and/or information on moderately complex matters.

Work Conditions

  • Works outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, high noise levels, rough terrain, and occasional work on ladders, roofs, attics, and under houses as well as confined spaces.
  • May require overnight travel.
  • May have residence requirement due to callout response time.
  • Works as an individual contributor and/or as member of a team.

Physical Demands

  • Requires occasionally performing activities including, but not limited to, bending, stooping, grasping, reaching, twisting, turning and/or lifting.
  • Requires acute sense of sight and hearing (corrected or uncorrected) and strong sense of smell.
  • Must be able to lift tools, equipment and materials up to and including 60 pounds.

  • As a Safety-Sensitive position, pre and post employment screenings, including but not limited to drug testing as outlined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and motor vehicle record (MVR) background checks are required.

Onboarding

Description of Course: As a part of your on-boarding process all new employees will attend Atmos Energy Essentials 3-Day. This 3-day training at the Charles K Vaughn center in Plano, TX has been designed to provide new employees with the keys to success at Atmos Energy. The information and activities provide the foundation for all other learning activities. Participants learn about what matters to the organization and how they fit into the vision and strategy. Topics include how to be-incident free, give back to the community, achieve financial results, serve the customer and learn something new each day. Participants also learn about themselves and other team mates, what it means to be at your best each day, how to hold themselves and others accountable and provide feedback. After leaving the three-day session new employees are better prepared to participate as a team member and contribute to the organization.

Job Readiness Skills

Description of Course: Gas Essentials is a five-week class that provides basic knowledge and skills of Natural Gas Operations for new Service Technician 1 and Construction Operator 1 role. This instructor led class will:

  • Provide consistent training for Service Technical A22:C36-on practice according to procedures for building meter loops, activating, and deactivating natural gas on residential meters.
  • Ensure that technicians receive training in customer service, safety, recognizing hazards, reacting to conditions, requesting help, meter handling, terms, and the core values of AtmoSpirit.

Instruction Type: Instructor-Led Training

Timeframe: 5 Weeks

Prerequisites: Atmos Energy Essentials, Natural Gas 101

Operator Qualifications: H01, H02, I10, M08, M16, M21

Description of Course: Corrosion Essentials CBT eLearning modules that are pre-requisites for corrosion technician but elective for CO1, CO2, and Senior CO.

Description of Course: The purpose of Construction Essentials is to provide construction operators with the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively perform Atmos Energy construction activities. This course is the first of two career progression modules for construction operators.

Instruction Type: Self-Guided eLearning Followed by Instructor-Led Training

Timeframe: The eLearning pre-work component will be approximately two to two and a half hours long and will introduce fundamental construction concepts. The instructor-led training component consists of four weeks of training and one week for testing.

Prerequisites: Atmos Energy Essentials,  Gas Essentials

Operator Qualifications: F01, F02, F03, H03, I01, I09, L02, L04, M04, M05

Description of Course: Advanced Service is a four-week class that provides advance knowledge and skills needed to progress into a Service Technician 2 and Construction Operator 2 role. This instructor-led class will:

  • Provide consistent skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively recognize and react to service/emergency issues.
  • Provide hands-on practice according to procedure requirements for building 5lb set. Provide hands-on practice according to procedure requirements for building two and three stage cut high pressure meter sets.
  • Ensure technicians receive training in customer service, safety, emergency responder, hazards recognition, line locating, FieldSmart use, requesting help, meter handling, terms, and the core values of AtmoSpirit.

Timeframe: 4 Weeks

Prerequisites: Atmos Energy Essentials, Natural Gas 101, Gas Essentials

Operator Qualifications: H04, M03, M13, M15, M17, M20, M22

Description of Course: The purpose of the Advanced Construction course is to provide Construction Operators with the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively perform senior-level Atmos Energy construction tasks and activities. In addition, this course is intended to help prepare Construction Operators to assume Senior Construction Operator responsibilities, including preparation for leading a construction team. Advanced Construction is the capstone course in the Construction Operator course progression.

Instruction Type: Self-Guided eLearning Followed by Instructor-Led Training

Timeframe: The eLearning pre-work component will be approximately 1 hour long. The instructor-led training component for consists of three weeks of instruction and one week for testing.

Prerequisites: Construction Essentials

Operator Qualifications: G01, G02, G03, 105, I06, I07, I08, L01, M07, M11, M14

Safety Skills

Description of Course: This advanced training program is designed to improve drivers’ skills and habits through a combination of classroom education and valuable on road instruction. Each driver learns through several behind the wheel experiences, and by observing an instructor-narrated drive that demonstrates unique techniques to navigate through traffic.

Operator Qualifications: n/a

Description of Course: Introduction to CDL is covered in Construction Essentials eLearning.

Instruction Type: This is a self-study program that depends on the division/state.

Timeframe: Must obtain within 6 months of hire. May not be a company standard. Each division/state has varying standards.

Operator Qualifications: n/a

Description of Course: Desctructive testing of fusions to ensure fusions pass inspection.

Instruction Type: Test (must be certified by a Poly Certifier)

Timeframe: Varies

Prerequisites: Passing OQ test and KSA

Operator Qualifications: Associated with F01, F02, and F03, but not required to receive the OQs.

Description of Course: Provides certification as a forklift operator under OSHA guidelines. This course is not part of Advanced Construction, and is only taken if needed.

On the Job Learning

Description of Course: The Construction Operator 2 on the job training is one-on-one training and practice sessions for each job task. The assigned coach breakdowns the job task into component steps and modifies training approaches in order to develop competence. The Construction Operator 2 demonstrates skills and techniques learned. Checklist completion documents the Construction Operator 2 is job ready.

Instruction Type: On-The-Job Training

Timeframe: Dependent upon approval of OJT coach and supervisor.

Advanced Job Skills

Description of Course: To teach Employees the process of welding inspection for the application of inspecting construction and maintenance welding activities per specific codes and standards. An Employee who successfully completes this course by showing their knowledge, skill and ability through testing will be qualified to inspect welds on Atmos Energy Facilities. This course is offered for the purpose of training and qualifying employees in becoming welding inspectors as specified by CFR 192.241(a) and API-1104 to ensure that the welding is performed in accordance with the welding procedure and the weld is acceptable under the API-1104 acceptance standards for all welding activities for the Atmos Energy Enterprise.

Instruction Type: Instructor-led Training

Timeframe: The estimated duration of this course is two days.

Pre-requisites: The course is intended for Welders, Construction Operators, Distribution and Transmission Operators. No prerequisites or pre-work required.

Operator Qualification: n/a

Description of Course: To teach Employees the process of welding for the application of construction and maintenance welding activities per specific codes and standards. An Employee who successfully completes this course by showing their knowledge, skill and ability through welding and testing will be qualified to weld on Atmos Energy Facilities according to the qualification limits, if any. This course is offered for the purpose of training and qualifying employees in becoming welders as specified by CFR 192, Appendix C and API-1104 for the Atmos Energy Enterprise and for current welders who do not weld on a day to day basis that may need a refresher.

Operator Qualification: E06 (KSA/certification is executed in the field, but written test is conducted here)
